“To Live and Thrive” in Massachusetts: Native American Perspectives on Wealth
9:30am
Duration:
1 hour
Description
The racial wealth gap has gained significant attention recently, but Native American families are almost always left out of these discussions, in part due to data limitations. This is why Boston Indicators commissioned the Institute for New England Native American Studies at UMass Boston to produce this unique report, released as part of our Racial Wealth Equity Resource Center research series. The markedly novel contribution of this mixed-methods report is the qualitative research findings from a series of in-depth focus groups.
Key themes emerging from these interviews indicate that land is central to Native American conceptions of wealth; financial stability often feels more important than amassing wealth; state and federal housing policy failure has hindered Native wealth accumulation across the generations; and more.
At the event, researchers will offer a detailed presentation of the report, engage in a discussion and answer audience questions.
