One of the most fundamental roles of nonprofit leaders and managers is to “hold” tensions in ways that are creative, constructive, and ultimately contribute to growth and development. In this workshop, based on the work of Barry Johnson’s “Polarity Management,” you will learn to distinguish between problems to solve and tensions to manage. The latter include things like balancing democratic process and strong leadership, autonomy and centralization, permission and accountability, planning and action, stability and disruption. These are not mutually exclusive opposites! They are actually complementary opposites and our organizations require BOTH sides of these equations!
In this workshop you’ll learn to graphically map “polarities” in ways that support communication, shared understanding and leadership. You’ll identify a tension in your organization and develop a communication and management strategy to move beyond chronic stuck-ness to creative movement forward.
