Data Storytelling 101

This training series will have two sessions designed to build information literacy, mapping, and data visualization skills for people looking to get started in using data, or more-experienced users looking to brush-up on their skills.

Session 1: Back to Basics

March 8th, 2pm - 4pm

The ability to tell a good story with data is a powerful skill. Yet, it can be overwhelming to know where to start or how to finish. A single dataset can contain many different stories depending on the values of the storyteller and the context of their experiences. This workshop will introduce the typical kinds of stories that can be found in data and give you practice in finding your own data-stories. Going back to basics, this first session will be paper-only. No prerequisites and no technology required.

Session 2: Visualizing your Data Story

April 5th, 2pm - 4pm

Now that you have the skills to find a data-story worth telling, this workshop will help you bring it to life through visualization. We will provide some guidance on visualization do's and don'ts, and introduce some free and easy to use web-based tools to show your information spatially on a map, or find insight through a chart.‚Äč
